Capitol Records

Capitol Records was founded in 1942 by lyricist and singer Johnny Mercer and songwriter Buddy DeSylva. The label was very successful and continues to produce records today. Capitol is known to have issued several special edition 78 RPM records long after the 78 era had ended.

The first design of label used by Capitol, as you can see, the 'capitol' dome in the logo extends through the text, this was later changed. This example dates to 1942.

The black Capitol label was used until the very late 1940s. This example dates to 1945.

By the early 1950s, Capitol had switched to a purple label with a simpler design that stayed in production for quite some time. This example dates to 1953.

In the mid to late 1940s Capitol released country and western music on the 'Americana' label. This example dates to 1947.

Special/Other Capitol Labels

A special yellow label 'for demonstration only' record produced by Capitol for National Dance Week promotion by Downbeat Magazine. This example dates to 1953.

A special 1969 commemorative release of two tunes by Tennessee Ernie Ford, pressed in modern vinyl.
